Step-by-step volunteer FAQ for AYSO Region 13 — background check, LiveScan, SafeSport, AYSOU courses, coach training, referee training, reimbursements.

Step-by-step instructions for completing the requirements every Region 13 volunteer needs each season. Tap any question to expand the answer.

What is the Volunteer Application and how do I complete it?
  1. Start at the InLeague registration system.
  2. Log into your account or create a new one. If a family member already has an account, go to the Family Profile and click Add User. Each volunteer, including youth referees, needs a unique email address.
  3. Click on the Volunteer Registration button. Sign the forms and waivers until you get to the end.

What is the Sterling Background Check and how do I complete it?
  • Only adult volunteers complete a background check.
  • Sterling Volunteers performs the background check, and the results are delivered to AYSO National Headquarters and Region 13.
  • Background checks are completed each year.
  • After you complete your Volunteer Application in InLeague you will receive an email from Sterling Volunteers. Click the link inside that email to initiate your background check. You do not need to pay; it’s included in the registration fee for all players.

If you cannot find an email from Sterling, you can begin your background check from inside InLeague:

  1. Log into InLeague.
  2. Select Family Profile from the menu on the left.

  1. Next to your name click Begin Background Check.

If you have issues completing your background check, email the Region 13 CVPA.

What is SafeSport and how do I complete it?
  • SafeSport training is offered separately via the U.S. Center for SafeSport.
  • It is not offered on AYSOU.
  • Log into InLeague.
  • Once logged in, click the graduation cap icon in the upper right-hand corner. We recommend completing this on a computer if possible.

Online Courses (through AYSOU)

How do I access AYSOU?
  • AYSOU (also known as eTrainU) is accessible from inside the InLeague registration system.
  • Once logged into InLeague, click the graduation cap icon in the upper right-hand corner. Use a computer if possible.
  • Do not bookmark AYSOU (eTrainU) directly. You can only access it from inside InLeague.

What is Safe Haven and how do I complete it?
  • Safe Haven is an AYSO-developed course that helps volunteers understand their duties and responsibilities while working with our soccer players.
  • Safe Haven can be completed through AYSOU.
  • This course can be completed online by all volunteers (in the past Coaches were required to take the in-person course).
  • To access the course in AYSOU: click Training Library → Safe Haven → AYSO’s Safe Haven 2022 (No Audio).

What is CDC Concussion Awareness and how do I complete it?
  • CDC Concussion Awareness is a CDC-developed online training that helps volunteers recognize concussion signs.
  • Available through AYSOU.
  • Completed online by all volunteers.
  • To access: click Training Library → Safe Haven → CDC Concussion Awareness — Online.

What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest training and how do I complete it?
  • Simon’s Heart Sudden Cardiac Arrest training helps volunteers understand how sudden cardiac arrest can affect our players.
  • Available through AYSOU.
  • Completed online by all volunteers.
  • To access: click Training Library → Safe Haven → Sudden Cardiac Arrest — Online.

Role-Specific Training

Coaches and referees take role-specific training. The training depends on the division you are volunteering in. Register through AYSOU.

How do I access Coach-specific training?
  • For coaching courses click Training Library → Coaching.
  • For 6U–10U you can choose between an Online course and a Full In-Person course.
    • If you choose the Online course, you will need to attend a separate In-Person field training.
    • We are offering Field sessions for 6U–10U. Find the schedule on our calendar and register for sessions on AYSOU.
    • The Full In-Person course includes the classroom and field portions together.
    • In Region 13 we are not offering Full In-Person courses for the 6U–10U courses.
  • For 12U you need to take the 12U Coach Training Pre-Course (Part 1) — Online, then register for and attend the 12U Coach (Part 2) — Full In-Person Course. You can register for the In-Person Part 2 after completing Part 1.

To find In-Person courses in AYSOU (including courses from other regions and 6U–10U Field portions and the 12U Part 2):

  • Click Training Event.
  • To find courses in a specific region, put the region into the Regions field (e.g. “Region 13” or “Region 88”).
  • To find courses in nearby regions, clear the Regions field and enter your home or work address into Location with a search radius in kilometers.
  • We don’t suggest using the Courses filter.

How do I access Referee-specific training?
  • For referee courses click Training Library → Refereeing.
  • For 6U–8U: take the 8U In-Person Referee Course.
  • For 10U–12U: take the Regional Referee — Full In-Person Course.

What if I am charged for a course by another Region or Area?

When you travel to training in other regions outside Area 1/C, they may charge you to cover their costs. Region 13 will reimburse you for any AYSO training charges. Submit a reimbursement request.

What if I am charged for a LiveScan?

LiveScan in Region 13 is free. If you attend a LiveScan event in another region you may be charged. Region 13 will reimburse you. Submit a reimbursement request.
