Getting Started as a Coach

How to get started as a coach in AYSO Region 13. Registration, background check, SafeSport training, and coaching certification.

Step 1: Register as a Volunteer

Register through InLeague and indicate your interest in coaching. Select your preferred age division.

Step 2: Contact Your Division Coach Administrator

Let your Division Coach Administrator know you’re interested in coaching. They’ll help place you with a team and answer division-specific questions.

Step 3: Complete Required Training

All coaches must complete these requirements before the season:

Background Check

Complete through InLeague.

Livescan Fingerprinting

Required once (unless you move to a new region). See LiveScan Fingerprinting for the form, address, and hours.

Online Safety Courses

Complete through AYSOU/eTrainU:

  • SafeSport training
  • AYSO Safe Haven
  • CDC Concussion Awareness
  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest awareness

Age-Specific Coach Certification

Attend an in-person class or complete online certification for your specific division.

Step 4: Attend Division Meeting

Division meetings are held in August before the season starts. You’ll receive:

  • Your coaching manual (6U, 8U, 10U, 12U, or Intermediate)
  • Equipment bag
  • Team roster
  • Practice field assignment
  • Important information for the season

Step 5: Contact Your Team

Once you have your roster, reach out to families to:

  • Introduce yourself
  • Confirm practice day and time
  • Schedule the team meeting
  • Answer initial questions

Step 6: Plan Your First Practice

Practices begin the day after Labor Day. Use your coaching manual to plan age-appropriate activities.

For your first practice:

  • Focus on introductions and fun
  • Assess skill levels
  • Establish team culture
  • Keep it simple
